Cylindrical roller backing bearings are available with two or three rows of rollers, in full complement (cageless) or caged designs, with or without integral ribs or washers. Ribless bearings offer the advantages of extremely simple geometry and very high radial load capacity. However, those without ribs or washers cannot withstand any axial load—thus, bronze or plastic thrust washers must be installed between the outer ring and the support saddle sides. Backing bearings with ribs (or washers) require no thrust washers, as their design enables them to handle simultaneous radial and axial forces. Cylindrical roller bearings are the most commonly used backing bearings.
