Paper Mill Bearings: Types, Applications & Selection

Updated: 15 Oct, 2026

Paper mill bearings are essential components in paper production equipment, where continuous operation, heavy roll loads, moisture, elevated temperatures and demanding lubrication conditions can affect bearing performance and service life.

Selecting the right bearing requires more than matching the shaft diameter. Bearing design, load capacity, internal clearance, operating temperature, lubrication and installation conditions must all be considered. JYHY Group manufactures medium and large industrial bearings and can evaluate standard replacement requirements and custom bearing solutions based on drawings, dimensions and application data.

Where Are Bearings Used in a Paper Mill?

A paper machine contains multiple rotating rolls and supporting systems. Each section operates under different mechanical and environmental conditions, so bearing requirements can vary significantly across the production line.

1. Forming Section

Forming rolls, guide rolls and other rotating components support the forming fabric and help control the movement of the wet paper web. Bearings in this area may be exposed to water, humidity, contaminants and continuous rotation.

Important considerations include sealing, lubrication, corrosion protection where required, and reliable operation under the actual load and speed conditions.

2. Press Section

Press rolls apply pressure to remove water from the paper web. Their bearing arrangements must support roll weight and operating forces while maintaining the required alignment and rotational stability.

Load rating, shaft deflection, housing alignment, lubrication and maintenance access are important factors when evaluating replacement bearings.

3. Dryer Section

Dryer cylinders operate under elevated temperatures as moisture is removed from the paper web. Temperature changes can affect shaft expansion, bearing clearance, lubricant performance and the overall bearing arrangement.

Bearing selection should account for the actual cylinder design, thermal conditions, operating speed and axial displacement requirements.

4. Calendering and Finishing

Calender rolls help control paper thickness, surface finish and smoothness. Their bearing systems must maintain the required roll position and support operating loads without compromising machine stability.

Depending on the machine design, engineers may need to evaluate radial load capacity, axial positioning, running accuracy, stiffness and lubrication.

5. Reelers and Winders

Reelers and winders handle the finished paper web and operate as part of the winding and tension-control system. Bearings must suit the roll loads, rotational speed, shaft arrangement and operating duty.

Correct fits, alignment, lubrication and vibration monitoring help support stable operation and predictable maintenance intervals.

6. Drive Systems and Auxiliary Equipment

Gearboxes, transmission systems, pumps, conveyors and other auxiliary equipment also rely on bearings to transfer loads and support rotating shafts.

The appropriate bearing type depends on the equipment configuration, load direction, speed, available space and maintenance requirements.

Common Types of Paper Mill Bearings

Several bearing designs may be used across a paper mill. The following types are common in industrial machinery, but their suitability for a particular paper machine position must be verified against the original equipment specifications.

Spherical Roller Bearings

Spherical roller bearings are designed to support substantial radial loads and, depending on the design and arrangement, axial loads in both directions. Their self-aligning capability helps accommodate a degree of angular misalignment between the shaft and housing.

These characteristics can be useful in selected roll supports and auxiliary equipment where shaft deflection or alignment variation is a consideration. However, self-alignment does not eliminate the need to control housing alignment, shaft fits, lubrication and operating clearance.

Cylindrical Roller Bearings

Single-row cylindrical roller bearings and multi-row cylindrical roller bearings are designed primarily for radial load support. Depending on their internal design, they can offer high radial load capacity and may allow axial displacement between bearing rings.

Specialized self-aligning cylindrical roller bearing designs are also available for certain paper machine dryer-cylinder applications. These designs are not interchangeable with conventional cylindrical roller bearings simply because their dimensions appear similar. Internal geometry, alignment capability, axial displacement and operating conditions must be checked.

Tapered Roller Bearings

Tapered roller bearings can support combined radial and axial loads. Depending on the bearing arrangement and equipment design, they may be suitable for selected drive systems, transmissions and auxiliary equipment in paper mills.

Selection requires consideration of contact angle, axial load direction, mounting arrangement, preload or endplay requirements, and lubrication. Their suitability for a specific paper machine position should be confirmed against the original equipment specifications.

Typical Bearing Series to Consider

Bearing series can provide a starting point when investigating replacement options. The examples below are not universal recommendations for every paper machine. The correct bearing depends on the roll position, load, speed, temperature, shaft arrangement, required clearance and original bearing specification.

Bearing Series or Design Potential Considerations Selection Checks
222 spherical roller bearings Potential option for suitable roll supports and auxiliary equipment. Load rating, dimensions, clearance, lubrication and alignment.
223 spherical roller bearings Potential option for applications requiring substantial radial load capacity. Actual loads, speed, internal clearance and mounting conditions.
230 spherical roller bearings May be evaluated for selected heavy-duty industrial arrangements. Load capacity, operating temperature, clearance and lubricant.
231 spherical roller bearings May be considered for suitable heavy-load applications. Complete designation, fit, temperature, alignment and service conditions.
Specialized self-aligning cylindrical roller bearings Designed for certain applications where cylindrical roller load capacity and alignment accommodation are required. Specific internal design, axial displacement, shaft deflection and OEM requirements.
Important: The series listed above are preliminary references, not confirmation that a particular series is suitable for a dryer cylinder or another specific paper machine position. Always verify the complete designation, dimensions, internal design, clearance, precision and operating requirements before ordering a replacement.

Key Factors in Paper Mill Bearing Selection

Selecting paper mill bearings requires an assessment of the complete operating environment. A bearing that matches the original dimensions may still perform poorly if its internal design or operating specifications are unsuitable.

1. Operating Temperature and Thermal Expansion

Temperature is particularly important in dryer sections and other heated equipment. Changes in operating temperature can affect shaft and housing dimensions, bearing internal clearance, lubricant viscosity and material performance.

Engineers should establish the actual operating temperature and consider the temperature difference between the shaft, bearing rings and housing. The appropriate internal clearance and material or heat-treatment specifications should be selected for the application rather than assumed from the bearing’s dimensions alone.

2. Radial and Axial Loads

Bearing loads may arise from roll weight, web tension, pressing forces, drive torque, belt or gear forces, and dynamic operating conditions. Both radial and axial loads should be evaluated, including their direction, magnitude and variation during operation.

The bearing type, size and internal geometry must provide adequate load capacity and the required service life under the actual duty cycle.

3. Operating Speed and Running Accuracy

Running speed affects heat generation, lubrication requirements and the suitability of the bearing arrangement. Roll stability and product quality may also depend on shaft runout, bearing precision, mounting accuracy and system stiffness.

Precision requirements should be determined by the equipment design and operating conditions. A higher precision class alone does not compensate for unsuitable fits, poor alignment or inadequate lubrication.

4. Lubrication and Contamination

Paper mills can expose bearings to water, moisture, fibers, dust, process chemicals and other contaminants. Inadequate lubrication or contaminated lubricant can accelerate wear, increase friction and shorten bearing service life.

The lubrication method, lubricant type, supply rate, relubrication interval and sealing arrangement should match the bearing design and operating environment. Maintenance teams should also inspect lubrication lines, seals and lubricant condition as part of routine servicing.

5. Internal Clearance and Alignment

Internal clearance influences the bearing’s operating condition and load distribution. It can change during mounting and operation because of fits, temperature differences and shaft or housing deformation.

The required clearance must be determined from the complete arrangement. Engineers should also evaluate shaft deflection, housing alignment and any axial displacement required by the machine design.

6. Replacement Dimensions and OEM Specifications

When replacing an existing bearing, the original designation is an important starting point. If the designation is unavailable or the bearing is a special design, the dimensional and application information becomes especially important.

  • Bore diameter, outside diameter and overall width.
  • Complete bearing designation and internal construction.
  • Internal clearance, precision class and required fits.
  • Operating speed, load, temperature and lubrication method.
  • Shaft, housing and mounting arrangement.
  • Original drawings, equipment model and maintenance history, where available.

Common Causes of Premature Bearing Failure in Paper Mills

Premature bearing failure can result from several interacting factors. Identifying the underlying cause is important before installing a replacement, otherwise the same problem may recur.

Observed Problem Possible Causes Recommended Checks
Excessive operating temperature Insufficient lubrication, unsuitable clearance, excessive preload or excessive load. Check lubrication supply, operating clearance, mounting conditions and actual loads.
Abnormal vibration or noise Misalignment, damage, contamination, incorrect fits or shaft deflection. Inspect bearing surfaces, shaft and housing alignment, fits and vibration trends.
Premature fatigue damage Excessive load, inadequate lubrication, contamination or unsuitable operating conditions. Review load calculations, lubricant condition, cleanliness and bearing specification.
Corrosion or surface damage Moisture ingress, contaminated lubricant or inadequate protection during storage and operation. Inspect seals, lubrication practices, storage conditions and contamination sources.
Uneven wear or localized damage Misalignment, uneven loading, installation errors or incorrect internal clearance. Check mounting procedures, shaft geometry, housing condition and bearing arrangement.

These symptoms are not definitive diagnoses. A bearing inspection, operating data and review of the machine arrangement are needed to identify the actual failure mechanism.

Custom Industrial Bearings for Paper Mill Equipment

Some paper machines use specialized bearing arrangements or legacy equipment for which a direct standard replacement may be difficult to source. In these cases, engineering drawings, original bearing samples and verified dimensional data can help establish the replacement requirements.

JYHY Group manufactures medium and large industrial bearings and can assess OEM and custom manufacturing requests according to the available technical information. Depending on the application and manufacturing feasibility, the review may cover:

  • Custom dimensions and drawing-based manufacturing.
  • Review of bearing designation and dimensional requirements.
  • Evaluation of material, clearance and precision requirements.
  • Assessment of operating conditions and replacement requirements.

For a reliable replacement, dimensional compatibility alone is not sufficient. Internal construction, load capacity, fits, clearance and operating conditions must also be checked before a proposed bearing is confirmed.
